I started playing Magic in 2007, and my memory from reading the Magic website around that time was that R&D put phasing in the same category as banding: a horrendously complicated mechanic that could never come back. What led to the change in views on phasing’s complexity, or was it actually not considered too complex to begin with?,

The thing we’re interested is “phased out” and it’s basically flickering where creatures get to keep their stuff and not trigger entering or leaving the battlefield effects.
